The unique soft landscape, which stretches from both sides of the Rhône to the Mediterranean, has captured people’s imagination since time began. There are only few places on earth where the eternity of history is felt so strongly.
The amphitheatre is one of the best preserved from the Roman world. It was built around the end of the 1st century AD for the presentation of hunts and animal or gladiator combats. Over 23,000 people could find a place on the thirty four terraces in the Cavea.
This temple (Maison Carré ) was built in honour of Caius Cesar, who was the grandson and adopted son of Augustus, in 5 AD. It is the best preserved Roman edifice in Nîmes. It was part of a vast group of buildings called the forum.
The Pont du Gard was built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct of Nîmes (which is almost 50 km long) to cross the Gard river. The Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who designed this bridge, which stands almost 50 m high and is on three levels – the longest measuring 275 m – created a technical as well as an artistic masterpiece. |
